Dear Families and Staff,
As you are likely aware, Nassau County Supreme Court ruled that the NYS Department of Health exceeded its authority in enacting the mask regulation, 10 NYCRR 2.60, in Demetriou et al. v. New York State Dep’t of Health et al. This regulation is the subject of conflicting decisions, insofar as Albany County Supreme Court recently upheld the regulation in Massapequa UFSD et al. v. Hochul, et al.
Our understanding from the State Education Department is the State of New York shall seek an appeal of the decision and seek a stay regarding the enforcement of the same. As a result, the State Education Department has stated that schools are required to continue to require the use of masks pending the final adjudication of the litigation.
Accordingly, Trumansburg Central School District shall continue to require all students and staff to wear masks for the health and safety of our community and in accordance with the recommendation of the New York State Education Department and County Departments of Health and Center for Disease Control.
We will continue to work with legal counsel to ascertain the implications of this litigation and any appeals for our District.
Kindly,
Kimberly Bell
TCSD Superintendent of Schools

Good afternoon,
As the number of cases of COVID-19 is on a regional and national uptick, we have made the difficult decision to remain remote for instruction until the December break. The number of positive cases we are experiencing represents both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Thankfully, the severity of the infection seems to be less; however, the protocols for quarantine remain the same, which is hugely impactful on our families and staff. Please keep in mind staffing is also impacted by routine health needs, general illness, day appointments, the need to care for a sick loved one, and or daycare needs related to quarantine.
We very much appreciate your support and patience as we work out the details for the days ahead. Our Food Service Director will communicate separately about food deliveries and resources. Students attending P-Tech, GST BOCES, Smith School, and Private schools will participate in in-person instruction on Monday 12/20-12/22. Likewise, students attending TST BOCES for Career and Technical Education (CTE) will participate in-person 12/20-12/22. Students that attend P-TECH or CTE that need transport from home to school on those days will need to contact the Transportation Department directly at bus@tburg.k12.ny.us before 2:00 P.M. Saturday 12/18. (Tomorrow).
Students in grades Pre-K-6 will follow a modified schedule; please look for links and additional communication from your teachers in the a.m. on Monday. Students in grades 7-12 should check their BrightSpace platform and follow their regular school day schedule from home.
Athletic events scheduled for 12/18 and 12/21 will continue as planned for the time being unless circumstances change. We are temporarily postponing the concert scheduled for Monday 12/20; please look for communication from the HS Music Department.
Our goal is to be in person for instruction beginning Monday, January 3, 2022. We will continue to assess our school data and share that information with you as it becomes available. Thank you in advance for understanding and supporting this temporary instructional shift. We desire to promote all community members' health, safety, and well-being. Thank you for doing your part, for the safety and health of our community.
May you have a healthy and joyous holiday season. I look forward to the New Year of 2022.
Kindly,
Kimberly

Good evening,
Today, December 16, 2021, has proven to be an extremely challenging day for our district. With the significant increase in COVID-19 cases in Tompkins County, we too are experiencing more cases with significantly more individuals placed in quarantine. Today, we report three new positives at the high school, with an additional seven with symptoms awaiting test results. Twenty students at the high school level have been impacted just today. Additionally, the elementary reports two more positive cases with a total of 37 individuals in quarantine between yesterday and today. We anticipate more positive cases from those placed in quarantine in the coming days. We have one adult positive at the middle school and one middle school student positive. We have one bus driver in quarantine. District-wide, we are experiencing a shortage in coverage to ensure safe instructional spaces.
With that said, our administrative team has made the difficult decision to be remote Friday, December 17, 2021. Athletics will also be canceled for 12/17. Only those students attending GST BOCES, Smith School and Private schools will participate in in-person tomorrow. Students in grades Pre-K-6 will follow a modified schedule; please look for links and additional communication from your teachers in the a.m. Students in grades 7-12 should check their Brightspace platform and follow their regular school day schedule from home.
We will continue to monitor the numbers and impact. We will decide on Sunday no later than noon to inform families of the expectations for next week (unless we have information to make that decision sooner). We apologize in advance for the inconvenience this has on our families and staff.
Kindly,
Kimberly Bell
Superintendent of Schools

December 14, 2021
Dear Families,
Today I am writing to you with much gratitude. Thank you for the trust, patience, kindness, and commitment to our schools you have shown over the past few months. We have successfully welcomed all students back to in-person instruction with your partnership. Our return to entirely in-person instruction has been both challenging and joyful. In addition to instruction, I am very grateful that our adults have brought back athletics, homecoming, a concert, a play, and much more with appropriate safety protocols. Our personnel has provided your children with academic support, emotional care, medical access and expertise, exemplar school nutrition, a clean and safe learning environment, and safe/reliable transportation. This year reflects much of the "normalcy" we experienced before the pandemic in so many ways.
This school year, we have several factors contributing to our success in remaining open to in-person instruction. First and foremost, the dedication and hard work of all school personnel! Additionally, approximately 90% of our staff are vaccinated. Children who are five years or older have access to the vaccination. We implemented distancing protocols in our classrooms that prevent an entire classroom from going into quarantine when there is a positive COVID-19 case. These measures, combined with universal masking, daily health screenings, access to testing on campus for symptomatic students, and your active participation/partnership, have allowed us to remain open with 100% in-person instruction. We recognize the benefit of having students in front of us and will continue to do everything within our power to maintain this model.
With that said, we are seeing a local spike in COVID-19 cases with regional impact. Today, Cornell University moved to remote instruction due to red alert status. Two of our neighboring schools have recently switched to remote instruction for short periods due to staffing shortages. I am optimistic that we will not need to go 100% remote. However, we must plan for the unexpected. We have just six days of in-person instruction (and one half day asynchronous 12/23) remaining before the December break; please have a tentative plan in place should we need to shift to remote learning with little notice. We have learned a great deal from our experiences last school year and will be prepared to deliver instruction remotely should we have that need.
To be clear, at this time, I am just sharing a concern based on Tompkins County's increase in COVID-19 positive cases. We intend to remain open to 100% in-person instruction assuming we have adequate personnel to carry out all responsibilities.
May you have a joyous, healthy, and safe holiday season. I look forward to all that the New Year will bring.
Kimberly
